The primary objective of this trade fair is to create business linkages between Kenyan and South African businesses.

South Africa has a vibrant economy with a population of 42 million people providing a huge market for businesses. South Africa produces many products of world-class quality for export, but is also a major importer of diverse products from most countries. South Africa supplements local agricultural production with imports and this remains an area of opportunity (Department of Trade and Industry website).

Kenya is the leading economy in East Africa. It is strategically located to serve the Eastern Africa market and has a well-developed business infrastructure. Kenya’s economy is predominantly agricultural with flowers, tea, coffee and other vegetables dominating exports out of the country. Tourism is a big income earner for the country with a significant contribution to the GDP. Although tourism in the coastal region is well developed there is still opportunities in other areas such as the Mount Kenya region and the Lake Victoria basin. Infrastructure development is high on the government’s agenda and South African businesses stand to gain by transferring skills and participating in this development. In 2006 South Africa exported approximately USD3.2billion worth of goods to Kenya in comparison to the USD161 million that was imported into South Africa. This imbalance presents opportunities for Kenyan businesses to grow their markets in South Africa. Kenya’s economy grew by 5.7% in 2007 (worldpress.org estimates). In 2007 the government launched vision 2030, which aims to maintain a sustained economic growth of 10%, create a just and cohesive society and create an accountable democratic country. The High commission of the Republic of Kenya through the Kenya trade fair aims to play a part in assisting the country of Kenya achieve these goals.
